London-based practice foster + partners just announced that they have broken ground on a new art museum in Datong’s New City, in China. The 32,000 sq m venue is one of four major new buildings within Datong New City’s cultural plaza. Four pyramidal roof peaks interlock to define the exterior form, evoking the imagery of an erupted landscape.
The roof is composed of four interconnected pyramids, which increase in height and fan outwards towards the four corners of the cultural plaza. Forming only 10 percent of the overall structure, maintenance requirements will be minimal. The building’s efficient passive design responds to Datong’s climate. The museum will open in 2013 and represent China in the ‘Beyond the Building’ Basel Art international tour.
