55 Baker Street is spectacular landmark development designed by Ken Shuttleworth of Make Architects. The original building, constructed in the 1950s, was formerly the headquarters of Marks & Spencer and takes up 1/13th of Baker Street. The site now has been transformed into an important new urban amenity.
The ground floor of the building has been completely re-clad and dedicated to retail units, cafes and restaurants. The typical sculptural effect of the building’s exterior is carried through into the interior, where it articulates the contrast between the existing structure and newly-built elements. The scheme has been made to minimize environmental impact and optimize energy efficiency.
