International firm SOM has recently designed the Diagonal Tower, a development proposal for the Yongsan International Business district in Seoul, Korea. It is a clever, energy-sipping design with expansive, bright interiors. The 343-meter high building successfully integrates massing, structure and performance in order to reduce construction costs, minimize wind loads, meet strict energy codes and provides dramatic views, while maintaining an iconic skyline presence.
The 64-story structure provides 170,000 square meters of office space, a glass auditorium, a penthouse executive lounge, and two sky lobbies with cafeteria and fitness center. The slinky tower’s use of advanced energy-saving technologies throughout actually improves the quality of life for its residents. An integrated chilled beam system transfers heating and cooling energy while utilizing the water, which result in less energy consumption and greater environmental comfort for the occupants.
